There are a couple of major differences between quartz and granite countertops, including how they are sealed, their rarity and pricing, and all of that is tied to how they are formed.
First off, granite is actual stone that has been mined out of the earth, while quartz is a manufactured product created from combining glues and epoxy together to form an artificial stone material.
Because granite is an actual stone, that means there are more natural pores and blemishes, so the stone will need to be sealed. So one major difference is that granite requires a sealant, but quartz does not.
Quartz is made by combining resign & glue, while Granite comes from quarries around the world.
Therefore, the pricing and quality of each product is much different. Granite’s pricing is really based off of its rarity and how difficult it is to quarry and ship to the United States. The tiered pricing of quartz has more to do with the difficulty in manufacturing & demand of the product, rather than simply how difficult it is to bring into the country.
Both Granite and Quartz can have amazing colors, but because quartz is an artificial stone product, they are able to make it look dramatically more dynamic and add in unnatural colors.
Quartz has selections that are much more colorful and exotic compared to the natural granite countertop stone. You’ll see some amazing combinations in countertops that really have to be seen in person to realize how brilliant they are.
When you’re choosing your granite or quartz countertop, you’ll see that there’s a rating tied directly to its pricing, and then you’ll also be selecting the edge finish of the countertop.
